Bootcamp
turorial
The tutorial is posted in Section 8 of the Syllabus. Click on "Bootcamp Notes." It's meant to be done on or near a computer, so you don't actually have to attend the bootcamp session. Those who come to Upson tonight and Thursday will work on exactly the same exercises...the only difference is that course staff will be at the sessions :-) We'll post the solutions by the end of the week...we want to make sure that you attempt to do the problems (programming involves active learning!).
A1 updates Sure enough I (DIS) missed some stuff -- we've answered some questions in the newsgroup. The A1 FAQ file is also updated.
Thu
8/27
website Welcome to CS211's course website. There'll be a number of updates as we confirm our staff (see Staff, Syllabus) and more (Bootcamp notes in the Syllabus, Section leaders).
office hours & consulting Among the updates are all of hours. They should be up by Mon or Tues this coming week.
sections Start on Tue 8/31 this coming week. We only have 6 sections, so it's likely that we will be adding a couple more (which of course means more updates to Staff :-). And yes, there'll be another announcement.
Assignment 1 Will be posted Thursday night. Just a few more tweaks.
CMS We will be entering everyone onto CMS over the next couple of days. If you've entered the course after the first lecture, we might not know about you. Wait for us to announce when we think we've got everyone on the system. We will also post instructions on how to gain access if the system still doesn't "know" about you.
Lectures All lectures will be posted on the website here.
Java Bootcamp Bootcamp will take place Tuesday, August 31, 7:30-10:30 PM in Upson B7 and again Thursday, September 2, 7:30-10:30 PM in Upson B7. The same material will be covered in both sessions.

Assignment 3 There was some confusion in lecture about how a general tree should be represented in assignment 3. The FAQ has been updated to clarify this.

Mon
9/27

Assignment 3 There is an error in the PDF document under section 6, the second file you should submit is XMLtoHTMLConverter.java not XMLParser.java. Also in the XMLtoHTMLConverter.java file you find references within the comments to the CS211In class when they should refer to the XMLTokenizer.

Mon
9/27

Assignment 3 Open the XML files with a text editor (e.g. Notepad) not with Internet Explorer since it could preprocess the XML, interpret it and "show" you a different XML file (the simplified version according to the complete XML grammar)

Fri
9/24

Section

For section this week we will be reviewing Assignment 3. We encourage everybody to read through the assignment before attending section.

Thu
9/23

Assignment 3

The third assignment has been posted.

regrade
requests
Someone asked DIS a question that the Syllabus didn't account for (how to attach a file to a regrade request -- you can't on CMS). So, he updated the Syllabus with more details about filing regrade requests. Well, we now have an even bigger syllabus :-)
Thu
9/9
Assignment 1 Assignment 1 has graded. The grading guide and solutions are posted in the assignments section.
Regrade requests for assignment 1 are to be done through CMS by Wednesday 9/15.

Assignment 2 The second assignment has been posted.
New sections! We added 2 more sections (Tue 12:20, Wed 1:25) to make smaller classes. The TAs for those times will help split up the classes and bring people to the new rooms.

Solutions
posted here. There might be some minor differences, because I updated things to version 1.2.
Notes We posted the next batches of section and lecture notes. The lecture notes might be updated, so be sure to check the night before lecture in case KP/JS make some fixes. Note that SaM is updated on CS212's site. Also, we recommend that you download and run the posted code. It's not enough to look at it...you've got to "play" with it, too.

Bootcamp
re-update!
I (DIS) corrected a few more typos we discovered on Thurs night. I posted Version 1.2 in the Syllabus (click on same link). The solutions will be posted later today.
assignments KP had to remind students to review the FAQ file. In general, if something seems weird, check the assignment FAQ file 1st. For A1, I posted updates. Actually, I think a number of incoming students aren't used to this pattern, so I simply updated the PDF :-)
Wed

Bootcamp
update!
I (DIS) corrected the typos we discovered on Tues. I posted Version 1.1 in the Syllabus (click on same link). I also added a bit in a few places, based on student questions. I've been toying with adding other sections... see Step 27. If there's something there you would like to see, please drop by office hours sometime or ask your TA to pass along to me.
consulting! Rebecca posted the hours on the Staff link. We're still adding more slots, so please forgive the raggedness.
A1 The TAs posted the updated files (stubs, fixed interface).

Sun 10/17 A4 Updates

I've placed updated Timing.java and PhoneBook.java files on the assignments page and in CMS. The Timing class has been changed significantly, so you will need to re-run your timing tests if you have already done them. The only change to the PhoneBook class is that I have marked it abstract, so if you've already modified your PhoneBook class, then just add "abstract" to the class definition.

I apologize for the inconvenience.

Sat 10/16 Prelim regrades due at end of consulting on Thursday this week

Wed 10/13

TA Evaluation Random prizes will be awarded for completing the on-line TA evaluation survey. Evaluate all of your Engineering TAs and maximize your chances of winning. The survey will begin on Monday, October 11 and end at midnight on Sunday, October 24. Access the survey at: http://www.engineering.cornell.edu/taeval/survey.cfm

To make the process easier, make sure you have your TA's name (first and last) and the course department and number at hand.

Once you have completed the survey, watch to see if you receive a special code upon submission that identifies you as a prizewinner. Your anonymous evaluation and feedback goes to your TA and is used by the Engineering TA Development Program to improve the quality of teaching in the College. Good luck, and thanks for your input.
